Going in person
How you get in depends on the club and the event. Some examples from recent seasons:
- Wellington, Florida. In the 2026 winter season the USPA National Polo Center invited spectators every Sunday afternoon from 28 December 2025 to 3 May 2026 at U.S. Polo Assn. Field One, with admission and Sunday brunch sold online through the National Polo Center. U.S. Open final day in 2026 added a ceremonial coin toss, the anthem, the half-time divot stomp, a brand shop and bookable tailgating spots. The 2025 U.S. Open final was played before a sold-out, record crowd.
- Tailgating. Virginia Polo describes polo tailgates as spectators setting up their own spread beside the field, anything from a simple picnic to an elaborate menu.
- England. Luxury London (June 2026) notes that Ham Polo Club welcomes picnics at Sunday fixtures and runs Friday Night Polo, that Chestertons Polo in the Park in Fulham adds a food festival and shopping village, and that Guards requires membership for Cartier Queen's Cup days. The Gold Cup final is played on the Lawns at Cowdray Park, which has a Lawns Enclosure for spectators. Cowdray reported record crowds in 2026, when the Ladies British Open and Gold Cup finals were played on the same day.
- Argentina. Early rounds can be free. At Tortugas in 2025 the preliminary matches had free entry while the semi-finals and final were ticketed, and La Nacion reported free entry to the opening stage of the 2024 Argentine Open at Palermo.
- Snow polo. The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz drew a record 26,200 on its 2025 final day.
Big finals can bring heads of state: President Javier Milei attended the 2025 Argentine Open final and presented the cup. Check each club's own site for how entry works for the day you want to attend.
Divot stomping
At half-time, spectators are invited to walk onto the field and press back the clumps of turf, called divots, that hooves have torn up. The USPA, quoted by the Aiken Standard in 2015, presents it as a chance to help repair the field, meet people and stretch your legs, and gives it as one reason to wear sturdy shoes. Club pages say it helps keep horses from tripping and helps the ball roll truer, and call it one of the game's oldest traditions with no known origin; we saw those claims only in search summaries.
It is a custom, not a rule. None of the HPA's 2026 rules, the USPA's 2024 Outdoor Rules or the AAP's 2026 women's rules mentions it. Go on only when the club invites spectators onto the field.
Streaming and television
United States
- USPA Polo Network. In December 2025 the USPA moved its network to a dedicated subscription streaming platform. Its FAQ describes about 45 live games in a free core schedule for competing USPA members and about 100 live games in the full 2026 slate, covering the Gauntlet of Polo, the U.S. Open Women's, the National Intercollegiate finals, the Pacific Coast Open, the U.S. Open Arena and Sunday 3 pm ET matches at NPC. It runs on the web, iOS, Android, Apple TV, Android TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV and Samsung smart TVs. In 2023 and 2024 its livestreams were free on uspolo.org and social media.
- ESPN. Global Polo Entertainment, the entertainment arm of USPA Global, extended its ESPN relationship through 2026; the original deal began in 2022. ESPN's 2025 polo coverage included the U.S. Open, the U.S. Open Women's, the Gauntlet and NIC games on ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNEWS, ESPN.com and the ESPN App. Chris Fowler hosted the 2025 and 2026 U.S. Open broadcasts, and the 2026 final was also streamed on Global Polo's YouTube channel.
- Breakaway. A series of 25-minute polo episodes made by Global Polo Entertainment and distributed by ESPN, also shown on StarSports, beIN Sports and Times of India.
Argentina
The 2025 Hurlingham Open and the 2025 Argentine Open final were shown live on ESPN through the Disney+ Premium plan in Argentina.
UK and elsewhere
Cowdray streams every Gold Cup game on Cowdray TV with Pololine TV, announced as free, though the same page also mentions a tournament pass. The Dubai Gold Cup posts match replays, with Polo Line TV as media partner. Whether the ESPN arrangement continues beyond 2026 was not known as of October 2026.
Reading the scoreboard
Goals on handicap
A team's handicap is the sum of its players' ratings. In a handicap tournament, the lower-rated team starts with goals on the board equal to the difference: Virginia Polo's example is a 16-goal team starting 1-0 up against a 17-goal team. Under the HPA's 2026 rules (Rule 7), those goals count toward the final score like any other.
- England, a 23-goal team, started the 2025 Coronation Cup with a two-goal lead over 25-goal Brazil, and won 16-7.
- In the 2023 USPA Gold Cup final, Scone got a one-goal start after an 8-goal substitute replaced a 9-goal player.
- In a 2026 Gold Cup semi-final at Cowdray, Gaston started one goal up from the handicap difference.
Try your own numbers with the handicap calculator.
Half goals
Under HPA 2026 Rule 7b, the handicap difference is scaled to the number of chukkas played (the difference times the chukkas, divided by 6), and any fraction counts as half a goal. That is why you see results such as 7 to 6.5 (the 2026 Ladies British Open final at Cowdray). Half-goal scores turn up under other rulebooks too, such as 5 to 4.5 in the 2025 Snow Polo World Cup final at St. Moritz, which plays under FIP and Snow Polo Association rules according to its 2024 rules leaflet.
On the flat
Some tournaments are played "on the flat", with no handicap goals. The Virginia Polo primer says open tournaments are, and the AAP's 2026 women's rules put every women's match on handicap except the Women's Open. That rule of thumb does not hold everywhere, though: the British Open at Cowdray is a handicap tournament, as the 2026 semi-final head start shows.
Chukker by chukker
Reports and scoreboards often give the running score after each chukker, which shows how a match swung. The 2025 Tortugas final went 1-0, 4-1, 4-4, 5-6, 7-7, 8-8, 11-9 and 12-11 across its eight chukkers. The 2025 Tortugas and Palermo finals both ran to eight chukkers (per the AAP and El Ancasti), more than the four to six that the HPA's 2026 rules set as standard (a Tournament Committee may vary it) and the maximum of six regular periods in the USPA's 2024 Outdoor Rules (the USPA revises its rules each year, so check the current book). Under the HPA's 2026 rules (Rule 13a), teams also change ends after every goal, so the end a team attacks keeps switching. Chukkas and timing has the details.
