United Kingdom

UK high goal: Cowdray and Guards.

The UK's top tournaments run from May to the end of July, centred on two clubs: Guards Polo Club at Windsor and Cowdray Park. All four of the tournaments below were finished for 2026 by the end of July.

The Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) governs polo in the UK. Its 2026 rules class tournaments of 17 to 22 goals and 15 to 18 goals as high level when awarding Victor Ludorum points, and Cowdray describes its Gold Cup as played at 22 goals, the top UK level. These are handicap tournaments, so the lower-rated team usually starts with goals on the board (see watching polo).

A note on sourcing: Guards Polo Club's website blocked our reader, so several Guards results below rest on search summaries of its reports. We say where that is the case.

The Gold Cup (British Open), Cowdray Park

The full name is the St. Regis British Open Polo Championship for the Cowdray Gold Cup. Cowdray calls it Europe's premier polo tournament. The final is played on the Lawns at Cowdray Park between the last two teams standing. In 2026 the tournament ran from 23 June to the final on 19 July, starting with 19 teams; the semi-finals on 15 July were Dubai 15, Ferne Park 12 and Gaston Polo Team 12, La Hechicera 11.

In the same 2025 final, Adolfo Cambiaso broke three fingers in a fall and Tomas Panelo replaced him for the last two minutes. In 2026 the Ladies British Open final was played on the same day as the Gold Cup final for the first time (see women's tournaments).

The Cartier Queen's Cup, Guards Polo Club

The HPA records that the Queen's Cup was first played in 1960 on the Queen's Ground at Guards. It was still played as the Cartier Queen's Cup in 2025 and 2026; we found no source recording a change of name after Queen Elizabeth II's death in 2022.

The Coronation Cup, International Day

The Coronation Cup is the feature match of the HPA's International Day at Guards, played on the Queen's Ground, with England facing a visiting team (a Commonwealth side in 2023). The HPA says the cup was first played in 1911 and has been held on International Day since 1971. The day opens with a young players' international for the Whitbread Tankard. England and Argentina met for the cup in 1995, 2000, 2009, 2014 and 2019, and the visitors won every time.
